Mozilla Wins 10 Million Users with Free Marketing

Use Open Source to Build a Community that Markets Your Product

In the 18 months since Mozilla released its open-source Firefox browser, more than 150 million users have downloaded it.

That's a pretty good performance for a nonprofit foundation that has virtually no marketing staff. The secret behind the success is SpreadFirefox.com, a Mozilla website where users post ideas for marketing schemes and volunteers put the most popular ideas into action. Don't laugh: The site has more than 160,000 members, and Mozilla claims it has lured 10 million users away from other browsers.

This is a powerful example of how community can build business.
